Dr. Charles Garbo, chair of the Cayuga Medical Center Cancer Committee, is the cancer liaison physician to the American College of Surgeons' Commission on Cancer. In 2008, the national Commission on Cancer selected Dr. Garbo as one of fifty-five physicians nationwide to receive the Cancer Liaison Physician Outstanding Performance Award for his exceptional leadership in developing local cancer-care services.
Dr. Garbo came to Ithaca in 1992 from the University of Massachusetts Medical Center, following a fellowship in hematology and oncology. On staff there for 3 years, he was an assistant professor his last year. He practiced and taught general oncology, and participated in research groups studying specific types of tumors, one of which was breast cancer.
