Cayuga Health has a responsibility to care for all members of our community of all ages. Recent social media activity has surfaced questions about care available for children at Cayuga Medical Center (CMC) in Ithaca. We are providing this update to reassure the community that services for children continue at CMC.
The CMC Pediatric Unit remains open. CMC is providing scheduled surgical services to pediatric patients on site. All Maternal and Child Health Services, including the NICU, are fully staffed and serving our communities. CMC will continue to treat children in the Emergency Department 24/7.
We have reached out to the pediatricians who communicated with their patients earlier today. They are sending a follow up message to clarify. That pediatric group has decided to no longer admit to the CMC Pediatric Unit from the Emergency Department. The unit however is still open and ready to care for children in our community. Cayuga Health is actively working to secure additional pediatric providers to care for children in the inpatient unit. While unfortunate, in the interim, 1-2 cases per week may need to be transferred to another facility.
