About

Regional Leader in Orthopedic Care

Cayuga Orthopedics is a partnership between Cayuga Medical Center, Schuyler Hospital, and Cayuga Medical Associates, creating the region’s largest provider of comprehensive orthopedic diagnostic, surgery, and rehabilitation services.

At Cayuga Health we are proud to offer state-of-the-art surgical techniques to correct a variety of orthopedic conditions. All our surgeons are board-certified in orthopedic surgery and several have completed additional fellowship training in subspecialties. Our mission is to give our patients the opportunity to make the best recovery possible, right here, close to home.

When you make an appointment to visit the clinic at Cayuga Orthopedics, we’ll connect you with the doctor who specializes in the area you need. You’ll receive a thorough evaluation by our specialists, who will evaluate and explain your injury, help your pain, and offer treatment options.

Six Steps to Successful Surgery

When you call Cayuga Orthopedics you will speak with the Orthopedic Patient Navigator (OPN), a licensed clinician with orthopedic clinical experience. The OPN can answer questions you may have concerning your orthopedic condition and will assist you in making an appointment with one of our orthopedic surgeons. Our orthopedic surgeons are board certified in orthopedic surgery and several have completed advanced training in subspecialties. Your consultation with the orthopedic surgeon will involve a comprehensive physical exam, imaging (x-rays, MRI) if necessary, a thorough explanation of your condition and a review of options for non-operative or operative care.

If you and your orthopedic surgeon decide the best option for treating your condition is surgery, the next step is to have a preoperative physical to make sure you are optimally prepared to undergo the procedure. If you are healthy with no past medical history you may be able to have your physical right in the orthopedic office and schedule for surgery at the same time. If you have current or past medical conditions that put you at a greater risk for surgery, you will be scheduled with your primary care physician. The surgery will not be scheduled until your primary care physician clears you medically. Our goal is to make sure you are safe and well prepared to undergo surgery.

After your preoperative physical exam in the orthopedic office or with your primary care physician, a nurse from Cayuga Orthopedics will contact you to discuss your surgery. The nurse will review your medical history, explain the procedure, and make sure you fully understand what to expect. If at any time you have any questions or concerns about your surgery you can contact Cayuga Health and speak to a preadmission nurse.

At Cayuga Orthopedics, we want your surgical experience to be as safe, comfortable, and stress-free as possible. We perform all inpatient surgeries at the medical center. Same-day surgeries and outpatient procedures take place at three locations: at the main campus in the medical center’s Same-day Surgery Center; at Surgicare, located on Arrowwood Drive off Warren Road; and at Schuyler Hospital in Montour Falls. Our orthopedic surgical team performs over a thousand procedures a year and help our patients through recovery. We understand, however, that for most of our patients, surgery is an unfamiliar experience. Our goal is to take excellent care of you, to educate you and your family about your surgery and what to expect during recovery, and above all, to help you get better.

Whether you have an inpatient or outpatient procedure, it is very likely that you will require physical therapy. Inpatient physical therapy starts soon after surgery to improve range of motion, strength, and mobility. When inpatients are discharged, they either receive home care or are referred to an outpatient physical therapy clinic. Cayuga Health has multiple state-of-the-art outpatient physical therapy clinics staffed with highly credentialed and experienced physical therapists. The clinics are located in Ithaca, Cortland, and Montour Falls. If you have an outpatient procedure, your orthopedic surgeon will refer you to outpatient physical therapy to help maximize your recovery.

On your follow up visit, your orthopedic surgeon will determine if you are ready to return to your normal activities of daily living, work, or sports. You may require further physical therapy or your orthopedic surgeon will suggest you continue on your own at home or at a fitness facility. Our goal is for you to get back to doing the things you love.
