About

Imaging Guided Diagnostic Sampling

During a thyroid imaging test, a board-certified radiologist will work along side an ultrasonographer to obtain a small sample of tissue using a hollow needle that is slightly larger than a cat’s whisker.  Outside the room, a pathologist will review the samples to confirm that we have enough cells to complete the analysis.  Our goal is to be sure that the procedure won’t need to be repeated because we didn’t get enough cells.

Results will be made available to your doctor within 3 business days.

Nodules (lumps) on the thyroid are common and while most of them are benign, about eight percent are cancerous. Our closely knit team of experts streamlines the diagnostic process and develops an individual care plan for each patient.

Scheduling

Thyroid biopsies are conducted every day at the Imaging Department of Cayuga Medical Center.  Appointments are usually completed in under one hour with no prep required and usually no change in diet or medication.

A thyroid imaging test (ultrasound) is required prior to booking an appointment. These tests are available at  imaging sites throughout Cayuga Health System.

Call (607) 252-3219 to schedule an appointment or to ask any questions about our program.

Changes in the thyroid gland are often easy to see and feel. Lumps or bumps, called nodules, are common. They may not need to be treated. Not all of them are cancer. Growths that are not cancer don’t spread from the thyroid to other parts of your body.

If your healthcare provider thinks you might have thyroid cancer, you will need certain exams and tests to be sure. Diagnosing thyroid cancer starts with your healthcare provider asking you questions. He or she will ask you about your health history, your symptoms, risk factors, and family history of disease. Your healthcare provider will also give you a physical exam.

After a diagnosis of thyroid cancer, you will likely have other tests. These tests help your healthcare providers learn more about the cancer. They can help show if the cancer has grown into nearby areas or spread to other parts of the body. The test results help your healthcare providers decide the best ways to treat the cancer. If you have any questions about these or other tests, be sure to talk with your healthcare team.

A fine needle aspiration biopsy of the thyroid is a procedure to remove a small sample of tissue from your thyroid gland. Cells are removed through a small, hollow needle. The sample is sent to the lab for analysis.

Talking with healthcare providers about cancer can be overwhelming. It can be hard to take in all of the information. It helps to be prepared.

Hormone therapy uses pills to give your body the hormones that were made by the thyroid gland before cancer treatment. Thyroid hormones are important because they help the body work properly.

Surgery is often the first and main treatment for almost all thyroid cancers. Your healthcare provider will use tissue removed during surgery to find out the cancer’s type and stage. The type and stage of the cancer helps tell whether you need additional treatment.

Chemotherapy uses special medicines to kill cancer cells. The medicines attack and kill cells that grow quickly, like cancer cells. Some normal cells also grow quickly. Because of this, chemotherapy can also harm those cells.

The stage of a cancer is how much and how far the cancer has spread in your body. Your healthcare provider uses exams and tests to find out the size of the cancer and where it is. Your provider can also see if the cancer has grown into nearby areas, and if it has spread to other parts of your body. The stage of a cancer is one of the most important things to know when deciding how to treat the cancer.

I was very nervous and the nurse I had was very comforting. Tonight we had to take my son to the emergency room and they were awesome with him! We got right in. “
