May 28, 2020 Ithaca, New York –– On Tuesday, Cayuga Medical Center (CMC) released a 93-year-old Coronavirus patient with applause. Today, they released their first long-term patient, 57 days after being admitted into the Emergency Department due to Coronavirus complications. Joan Murphy, 71, a long-time Ithaca resident and respected nurse, checked herself into Cayuga Medical Center on March 31.
“I came to this hospital very sick. What I couldn’t do for myself, they (CMC staff) did for me,” stated Murphy. “My son, who lives in Connecticut, is very relieved, and my brothers and sisters from all over the country were rooting for me.” Once again, much like earlier this week, the staff at CMC gave a warm send-off with well wishes and applause.
“Ms. Murphy had a long and tough battle, and was extremely determined to beat coronavirus,” stated Martin Stallone, CEO of Cayuga Health. “It was through her strong will and with the managed coordinated care of our doctors, nurses and therapists, that we were able to send her home today.”
“I don’t think that before this happened to me, I realized how good Cayuga Medical Center was in terms of therapy,” continued Murphy. “So, it really opened my eyes that we have this wonderful facility in Tompkins County. Probably many of us didn’t realize how good it is. It will be nice to get home and Skype with my entire family and just be home,” she concluded.
Cayuga Health has led the region in the fight against COVID-19. They offer two drive through testing centers and have partnered with Ithaca based Rheonix, in April, to provide same day testing services to frontline workers. They will be housing an additional Rheonix testing device, being purchased by Tompkins County, which will allow increased daily capacity to thousands of COVID-19 tests.
