Confirmed cases of measles have been reported in the region, including in Tioga, Steuben, Allegany and Seneca counties. Centralus Health is urging anyone who has symptoms of measles or believes they may have been exposed to call before arriving at an emergency department, urgent care center or medical office. 

Calling ahead allows health care teams to provide instructions before arrival and take appropriate precautions to reduce the risk of exposing other patients, visitors and staff. 

There are currently no changes to operations at Centralus Health facilities. Centralus Health is also encouraging community members to know the signs and symptoms of measles, review their vaccination status and take steps to help prevent the spread of the highly contagious disease. 

Symptoms typically appear seven to 21 days after exposure and may include: 

  • High fever 
  • Cough 
  • Runny or congested nose 
  • Sore throat 
  • Red or watery eyes 
  • A red, blotchy rash that usually begins on the face and spreads to the rest of the body 

Measles can lead to serious complications, including pneumonia, brain swelling, hearing loss and hospitalization. Young children, pregnant people and individuals with weakened immune systems may be at greater risk for severe illness. 

Anyone who develops symptoms of measles or believes they may have been exposed should contact their health care provider or local health department for guidance. Before seeking care in person, call the facility first. This gives health care teams an opportunity to provide instructions and prepare for the patient’s arrival while limiting potential exposure to others.

  1. Contact your local health department or healthcare provider immediately

  2. Call before seeking in-person care

Measles is a highly contagious viral illness that spreads through the air when an infected person coughs or sneezes. People who are not vaccinated are at greater risk of becoming infected and experiencing serious complications. 

The measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine is highly effective at preventing measles. Two doses provide about 97% protection against infection. Anyone who is unsure of their vaccination status should contact their health care provider. People born before 1957 are generally considered immune because they were likely exposed to measles before vaccination became widespread.
