Eight historic sculptures from the New Deal era, located in the Mitchell Gardens at Cayuga Medical Center, have been restored, breathing new life into Tompkins County’s only Works Progress Administration (WPA) artworks.

In collaboration with the Cayuga Medical Center Foundation, artist Steve Carver led the restoration.  Carver has been dedicated to the sculptures’ care for years.  Along with art conservator Kasia Maroney, Carver previously restored the works in 2016. This latest effort was undertaken to address the effects of weathering over time.

Carver volunteered his expertise for this restoration and noted, “These sculptures aren’t just art, they are our county’s connection to a pivotal era in history. I’m honored to help preserve them for future generations”.

Created in the late 1930s, the pieces were originally installed at what was once the Biggs Memorial Hospital children’s tuberculosis ward. Over decades, exposure to the elements took its toll on these beloved sculptures, prompting this restoration initiative to ensure their preservation.

Carver generously raised funds for this in-depth restoration as well as the statues’ ongoing maintenance, which will ensure the sculptures remain in pristine condition. A modest annual spray treatment will prevent dirt, moss, and lichen buildup, helping the sculptures retain their beauty for years.

“We are incredibly fortunate to have these beautiful sculptures in the gardens at Cayuga Medical Center”, said Steph Bailey, Director of Philanthropy for Cayuga Health.  “This project showcases how a small investment in regular maintenance can sustain an important part of our community’s cultural heritage”.

Bailey added. “The public’s response and support have been overwhelming and underscore the value these sculptures hold in Tompkins County.”

what our patients are saying

“I have to say the last couple visits that I’ve had here have been wonderful. About a month ago I had an EGD and the staff were amazing! Explained everything in detail and made me feel at ease. I was very nervous and the nurse I had was very comforting. Tonight we had to take my son to the emergency room and they were awesome with him! We got right in. “

“I have had many occasions visiting CMC for myself and family. We have never had a bad experience there at all. Last October I had surgery and the nurses were amazing especially my night nurse. Thank you to all CMC staff for doing what you do every day with a smile.”

“The staff and accommodations at Cayuga Birthplace are amazing!!! This is what it I imagine it would feel like to be a celebrity getting VIP treatment.
