Cayuga Medical Center, a member of Centralus Health, has earned a “B” safety grade from The Leapfrog Group, reflecting meaningful improvements in patient safety.

“Earning a ‘B’ Hospital Safety Grade is a testament to the commitment of everyone at Cayuga Medical Center—from leadership to frontline caregivers—working together to put patients first,” said Missy Danforth, Senior Vice President of Health Care Ratings at The Leapfrog Group. “Cayuga is showing that meaningful improvement is possible.”

The improved grade reflects focused efforts to strengthen safety practices, reduce preventable risks, and standardize care. Early data from the next reporting period shows continued progress, including fewer patient falls, pressure ulcers, and other key safety events.

Nursing leaders and frontline nurses played a central role in these improvements. Dr. Debra Morton, RN, Chief Nursing Executive, emphasized the impact of their work. “The Cayuga Medical Center nurses have created meaningful improvements in the quality of care we provide. They have strengthened collaboration, communication with clinical colleagues and families, and reinforced consistency in how care is delivered. Their dedication and professionalism directly contributed to this improved Leapfrog score and, more importantly, to safer care for our patients.”

Andreia de Lima, MD, Co-Chief Medical Officer of Centralus Health, said the grade underscores the organization’s commitment to patient safety. “We want to extend our heartfelt thanks to every team member across Centralus Health for their unwavering commitment to patient safety and quality care. The latest Leapfrog results reflect the strength and momentum of our collective efforts,” said de Lima.

The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade is a national program focused exclusively on preventable medical errors, infections, and injuries. Grades are updated twice each year and are free to the public.

what our patients are saying

“I have been a Hemo dialysis patient for almost Five years. Prior to dialysis and during dialysis I have had several trips to the ER, due to other health issues & was admitted to CMC more than a few times. Each and every time I’ve been there, whether in patient or out, I have been treated with respect, professionalism, and efficiency. I give this hospital 2 thumbs up!! Thank you CMC for taking care of me all these years!!”

“I have had many occasions visiting CMC for myself and family. We have never had a bad experience there at all. Last October I had surgery and the nurses were amazing especially my night nurse. Thank you to all CMC staff for doing what you do every day with a smile.”

“I have to say the last couple visits that I’ve had here have been wonderful. About a month ago I had an EGD and the staff were amazing! Explained everything in detail and made me feel at ease. I was very nervous and the nurse I had was very comforting. Tonight we had to take my son to the emergency room and they were awesome with him! We got right in. “

“The staff and accommodations at Cayuga Birthplace are amazing!!! This is what it I imagine it would feel like to be a celebrity getting VIP treatment. I wish I could stay longer – even the food options are 5 Star! The amenities are great. Everything is clean and designed beautifully. Not a single complaint, only praises!”
