Cayuga Medical Center (CMC) has received the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association’s Get With The Guidelines®- Gold Plus Award for proven dedication to ensuring all stroke patients have access to best practices and life-saving care. This quality achievement attests to CMC’s commitment to ensuring stroke patients receive the most appropriate treatment according to nationally recognized, research-based guidelines, ultimately leading to more lives saved and reduced disability.
CMC earned the American Stroke Association’s Target: Stroke Honor Roll award by meeting specific quality achievement measures for the diagnosis and treatment of stroke patients at a set level for a two-year period. These measures include evaluation of the proper use of medications and other stroke treatments aligned with the most up-to-date, evidence-based guidelines. The goal is speeding recovery and reducing death and disability for stroke patients. Before discharge, patients also receive education on managing their health, get a follow-up visit scheduled, as well as other care transition interventions.
CMC also received the American Heart Association’s Target: Type 2 Honor Roll award. Target: Type 2 Diabetes aims to ensure patients with Type 2 diabetes, who might be at higher risk for complications, receive the most up-to-date, evidence-based care when hospitalized due to stroke.
“Our entire health system is dedicated to improving the quality of care for our stroke patients by implementing the American Heart Association’s Get With The Guidelines- initiatives,” said Dr. Caelyn Bellerose, Stroke Director & Emergency Medicine Physician at Cayuga Health. “The tools and resources provided help us track and measure our success in meeting evidenced-based clinical guidelines developed to ensure more of our patients can experience longer, healthier lives.”
“We are very pleased to have earned this level of recognition and achievement, once more, from the American Heart Association and the American Stroke Association for our efforts to provide the best possible care to our stroke patients,” states Dr. David Halpert, Neurologist at Cayuga Medical Center. “Consistent adherence to the latest scientific treatment guidelines improves stroke survival rates and can help patients recover better.”
According to the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association, stroke is the No. 5 cause of death and a leading cause of adult disability in the United States. A stroke occurs when a blood vessel that carries oxygen and nutrients to the brain is either blocked by a clot or bursts. When that happens, part of the brain cannot get the blood and oxygen it needs, so brain cells die. Early stroke detection and treatment are key to improving survival, minimizing disability and accelerating recovery times.

what our patients are saying
“I have been a Hemo dialysis patient for almost Five years. Prior to dialysis and during dialysis I have had several trips to the ER, due to other health issues & was admitted to CMC more than a few times. Each and every time I’ve been there, whether in patient or out, I have been treated with respect, professionalism, and efficiency. I give this hospital 2 thumbs up!! Thank you CMC for taking care of me all these years!!”
“I have had many occasions visiting CMC for myself and family. We have never had a bad experience there at all. Last October I had surgery and the nurses were amazing especially my night nurse. Thank you to all CMC staff for doing what you do every day with a smile.”
“I have to say the last couple visits that I’ve had here have been wonderful. About a month ago I had an EGD and the staff were amazing! Explained everything in detail and made me feel at ease. I was very nervous and the nurse I had was very comforting. Tonight we had to take my son to the emergency room and they were awesome with him! We got right in. “
“The staff and accommodations at Cayuga Birthplace are amazing!!! This is what it I imagine it would feel like to be a celebrity getting VIP treatment. I wish I could stay longer – even the food options are 5 Star! The amenities are great. Everything is clean and designed beautifully. Not a single complaint, only praises!”
